(Fragaria vesca) (Also known as Reine des Vallees) Intensely red, sweet and very richly flavored. Fruits are wide-shouldered and much larger than most alpine types. Heavy cropper that yields all summer. This standard European variety is seldom seen in America, but deserves much wider recognition here. Sumptuous!

What are the pros? Plant it and ignre it!

What are the cons? Low yeild

Review:

Easy to grow, mine are on year three and a 4x4 patch produces about a quart a year if you save them in the freezer until you have enough to use... but it is hard to save them... I think I eat most as they come off the plant! Mine are in full sun and beyond keeping them watered and pulled a few weeds(they crowd out many weeds!) I haven't done anything to them! Didn't cover them last winter and it got down to -20f! They came back great and thick this year. After next year I am going to have to divide them into another spot...

What are the pros? Beauti Plant, yummy fruit

What are the cons? The mice like them too much

Review:

I started these from seed in early March using a heat pad and grow light. They sprouted quickly and most of them remained very small until I planted them outside in May. They grew easily in the ground and have created a nice ground over under a peach tree. Like other alpine strawberries, the fruit is a bit dry and seedy but the flavor is very good. Reminds me of a fruit roll-up. The only bad thing is that rodents like to eat them so I have to pick them slightly underripe. They would do well in a pot, I think.

What are the pros? Flavor

What are the cons? Smaller size

Review:

Smaller strawberries than maybe your used to but when I tried one it was the most flavorful I have ever eaten, so good. It's worth growing the only strawberry I grow now. I only was able to grow a couple container plant s last year so maybe I can get bigger yeilds and size this year.
