Royal Golden Watermelon

The most beautiful watermelon we carry; the rind of this heirloom turns brilliant golden-yellow when ripe! The distinctive color makes it a snap to know when to harvest and is so beautiful in your garden. The tasty pinkish-red flesh is sweet, crisp and refreshing. This variety is much larger than ‘Golden Midget’, with fruit weighing 8-25 lbs. We are so happy to offer seed for this great old melon that used to be offered by Willhite Seed of Poolville, Texas, until they discontinued it from their catalog in the 1970s and it almost became extinct.

What are the pros? Sweet and ripening indicator

What are the cons? none

Review:

With four plants (not hills) I harvested melons weighing 12 lbs, 24 lbs, 20 lbs, 17.5 lbs, 25.5 lbs, and 7 lbs. Like other reviewers suggested, I allowed the melons to turn orange before harvesting. Many were as sweet as a Charleston Grey. These were planted in May and most harvested in late July. An excellent melon that lets you know when its time to harvest. I have possibly two more ripening before the end of the growing season. I will definitely be growing this melon next year. The vines and leaves turn yellow, but this is normal. Four of the melons ripened within a one week window at the end of July/first of August. With so much melon, I decided to make watermelon wine out of one of them. I cant wait to taste the outcome!

What are the pros? Delicious, pretty, easy to gro

What are the cons? None

Review:

These grew very well here in north Texas. Very little care or watering required. It grew in some powdery white construction dirt behind the workshop, with some potting soil in the planting hole. No fertilizer. The other watermelons got an aphid infestation, but they didn’t seem interested in the Royal Golden. They were ready by mid-August-same as the cantaloupes. Still waiting on the other varieties. Pretty fruit, 4 on a plant so far, pretty sweet, although not as sweet as the Orangeglo. Fun to watch it ripen to a bright orange. Will definitely grow again!

What are the pros? Great Watermelon, Beautiful

What are the cons? Alternaria Leaf Blight Prone

Review:

I had no issue getting these seeds started as some of the previous commenters did. Royal Golden was the first of six varieties in my garden to reach maturity. The first one that I harvested was even a little overripe and had a hollow heart. I believe the issue with hollow heart was due to poor pollination. During the couple of days that pollination occured for that watermelon, it had rained a lot and there weren't a lot of bees out in the garden. The second one came a little later and it was perfect! Great watermelon flavor and crispness. My only complaint about this variety is it was the first one to get alternaria leaf blight in my garden, the leaves looked pretty bad but my watermelons still reached maturity. My plants all usually get this disease but this variety was hit the hardest..it may be more susceptible. If you don't live in a humid area then you probably don't need to worry too much about it. Something that I found interesting is the leaves and vines turn yellow as well!

Review:

I just harvested my first royal golden watermelon of the year. This watermelon is a beautiful golden on the outside and deep red on the inside. The flavor is just as good as it looks. Thanks baker creek for offering old varieties so the seed saving tradition lives on. I will be planting royal goldens every year from now on.
