(Cosmos bipinnatus) Deep rich ruby-red color is very unusual in a cosmos! Single blooms are a luxuriant, deep burgundy when they open, fading gradually to old rose as they mature. The contrast with the burnished gold of the centers is striking and very regal! Very compact plants reaching only to 2 feet. Superb for cutting, like all cosmos.

Review:

Love cosmos, but I always seem to fail if I try to directly sow them outdoors. Bought these the week before, started them indoors on the 24th along with two other varieties--Sensation (from Burpee) and Candy Stripe (from Ferry Morse). Came home from work today (the 28th) to see four of the rubenzas have already sprouted! And not a peep from their cousins! This has never happened before. Don't know if this variety is just easier to seed or if it's just better quality (not quantity) seeds, but I'm certainly more inclined to buy all of next year's supply of cosmos seeds from here!

Review:

I tried growing these because of a wedding request for the "deep pink" cosmos, which otherwise meant growing the usual suspect and picking the few dark flowers that showed up in a timely manner. I start all seeds in a greenhouse and I let these get pretty tall before it was warm enough to plant them in the garden. Some were already blooming and they were pretty leggy. I pruned them back and staked, and though they languished a bit at first, as it got warmer, they flourished. I'm delighted with the color which does start off deep reddish burgundy and fades to an old rose color, eventually much lighter than the photo they show for this flower. They have bright yellow centers. I like that these cosmos stay at about 24 inches tall as promised. I wish I could post a photo, but that's not an option here. I live in Zone 8 in the Coast Range of Oregon and these cosmos get a LOT of sun in our garden and reside in a raised bed that gets regular watering.
