(Mirabilis jalapa) True salmon-colored trumpets with a pale pink star at the center of each flower. A sophisticated addition to the garden. (Caution: Contact with skin may cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. All parts of plant are toxic. Do not take internally.)

What are the pros? Beautiful and abundant blossom

What are the cons? Didn't open until evening

Review:

I planted this beautiful flower in the summer of 2018, and it bloomed non-stop once it got going. No blossoms here in west-central Ohio until early July, but from then on they kept coming. I started them indoors but not way ahead. Outside, I planted one in nice potting soil in a good-sized planter, and it did bloom, but didn't get very large and eventually languished despite feeding. The four o'clocks I planted in the ground grew very large--about 2-1/2 to 3 feet tall and wide. The blossoms didn't open until 7 pm or so (and each blossom opened for just one day), but in the summer, that still gives plenty of time to enjoy them. If I had more garden space I would grow again, but I think I'll try something else new in 2019.

What are the pros? Color & Size

Review:

These were absolutely stunning! The look exactly like the picture, even better honestly. Every single seed I started germinated within days. I gave away most, as I only have a patio garden and could only keep 2. I planted them both in a large pot together and they literally grew to be as tall as me! They bloomed non-stop until October, I cut them back once when they started to slow down and they broke again and produced several more weeks of flowers. I saved all of the seeds and plan to plant to see what variety I get from them. I still have some of the original packet left, there were a ton of seeds! I plan to start those as well to hopefully get a nice mix. My parents planted theirs and they didn't get as large and bushy as mine did, but they had them in their garden where I planted them in rich potting soil so I would suggest feeding them heavily when you first transplant.

What are the pros? Good germination, robust plants

What are the cons? none

Review:

Seeds had good germination, plants were robust - larger and "huskier" than other four o'clock varieties I was growing at the same time, and flowers were slightly larger. Beautiful salmon color. The plants form large roots (like a parsnip or carrot) and in the fall after the plants were frosted, I dug them up and brought them in, stored them like dahlias, and replanted the following year when the weather warmed. They formed large plants really quickly and bloomed earlier. So - dig those roots if you want a head start the following year!
