This is a newer selection of this famous Italian cooking tomato. Long, cylindrical fruit is filled with thick, dry flesh and few seeds. This heavy producing variety is a standard for many Italian farmers and chefs.

The Blossom End Rot Tomato

What are the pros? Prolific heavy producer

What are the cons? Blossom End Rot

Review:

I've grown (tried to grow) this tomato in zone 6b for over 10 years. DON'T GROW THIS IN A CONTAINER or planter you will get blossom end rot regardless of how much bone meal, egg shells, calcified lime you put into the container. It's not good for square foot gardening either. This tomato plant cranks out tomatoes and you have to watch it like a hawk once it starts fruiting because it probably needs to be grown in its native soil in Italy, which is probably heavily calcified soil. They grow them in row crops in Italy. For the best success, Grow in raised beds or in tilled mounded amended soil, and foliar spray with calcium chloride or calcium nitrate & water. Plant them deep to attempt to prevent blossom end rot. This year, it is the middle of July and the plant has had 4 months of growth and the tomato plant is over 6 feet tall and about 3 feet in diameter under supports. Leaves are as large as a dollar bill. Tomatoes are about 3" This may be my last year with this variety.

What are the pros? lasted till winter

What are the cons? none

Review:

First this was from new raised beds. They grew well and I made a mistake of pruning them to only 1 stem. (mistake) I left it after that and they began to make more tomatoes. These tomatoes are great for canning. I did the florida weave and they broke the strings. I will be changing up my trellis technique and will not prune. They weren't prolific for me but I think its my fault. The plants survived our texas heat waves of over 100 degrees. They lasted until November when we had a freeze. I will try again since soo many people in our area rave about them.

Review:

One of several paste tomatoes we grew this year and almost every single San Marzano 2 had blossom rot. Other plants just a few feet away (and on same drip line) were fine.

What are the pros? TREMENDOUS YIELDS!

What are the cons? Nothing

Review:

I wanted to update on my earlier review. OMG these things are great! Heavy HEAVY producers. It was just unreal. I got on average 60-100lbs per plant. Just today i brought in 3 three gallon buckets off 27 plants! I read all the tips on blossom end rot so heres what I did. When i transplanted them when few inches tall i put into the hole a handful of manure and a heaping spoonful of home depots brand bone meal (in the green bag). As the plant grew i just side dressed with manure and bone meal. I did have a little aphid trouble at first but was easily fixed with pyrethrin and they bounced right back. These plants get tall and heavy. I used 3" square posts and had them 6' tall. They easily surpassed that and they broke over from the weight of fruit on top. Next year i will build a frame from pole to pole and make a arbor to support them.

What are the pros? Germination, Growth Rate,

What are the cons? Aphids love them

Review:

I ordered these and then read the reviews. I git so scared of the blossom end rot I prepared well. You see this is my first year garden at this property. We have sandy loam soil. First I amended the new garden plot with last winters horse manure. Was powdery and composted perfect. I grew these from seed and transplated in late april once about 4 inches tall. In EACH hole i sprinkled bone meal before planting. Doing that so far I havent had one instance on BER. Each plant is currently loaded and grow so fast I have to tie up plant every other day. Get you a 6' post. You are gonna need it! I side dressed them again with the composted manure again at about a month in garden. They love it and look extremely healthy. I will say the aphids have been my only bane. They attacked these viciously but left my other varieties alone. I treated woth pyrethran today. Hoping they keep cranking on as great as tgey have been. Loving them so far!
