Superb Southern pea from coastal Carolina, especially popular in traditional recipes from the Gullah Geechee of the Sea Islands. The small red-to-brown peas are believed to be similar to the type first carried from their African homeland in the early days of the slave trade, back in the 1600s. This variety has been grown in the Sea Islands outside Charleston ever since. Traditionally combined with Carolina Gold rice for a local staple dish, Reezy Peezy. Considerable diversity and outstanding vigor in this semi-wild type, and they taste delicious! Best used as dried peas. Recognized in the Slow Foods Ark of Taste.
