(Cleome hassleriana) Hardy annual to 4-6 feet tall. Also known as Rocky Mountain Bee Plant, Cleome was first described by the Lewis and Clark expedition. The shrub-like plants are topped by large open clusters of intriguing flowers, blooming late summer and into autumn. Color ranges from white to pink to dark reddish purple. Thrives in heat, tolerates some drought, self-sows where conditions are favorable. Imposing at the back of the border, or when grown in large containers. And yes, the bees do love it!

What are the pros? Unique

What are the cons? none

Review:

I first saw these flowers at Jefferson's gardens at Monticello. They were so beautiful, I remembered them ten years later when I started my own garden. They're a very unique shape of flower, like nothing else. They remind me of fireworks. They are long blooming- all summer, really, here in zone 4. I planted some two years ago in a pot on my front step. They set seed and I had volunteers last year in the small garden space next to the step. They are tall, almost four feet, but they do not flop over. It's windy here and these still manage to stay upright.

What are the pros? Spectacular, lots of blooms

What are the cons? None

Review:

Grown these pretty much every year, always, bigher than baseball, fluffy, sparker type blooms, exotic old timers. Always about 2- 3' tall and stand on their own with beautiful big green leaves, forked and come in varying shades of pink. My husband loves them, his favorite for showy. We planted a huge 8-10' round bed of them one year by our swing and they were spectacular:)! They bloom all summer. My grandmother called them Pins and Needles because the blooms have many long petals, and the seed pods are beautiful and long. They add to the attractiveness I think. Like fireworks for the garden. A must have:)! Love full sun and take the heat, no bugs at all, easy germination.
