Spinach Seeds, Monnopa
(Spinacia oleracea). Perhaps the sweetest spinach we have tasted, thanks to its exceptionally low oxalic acid content. This round-leaved variety can be grown as baby greens or to maturity. The small spoon-shaped leaves are tender and sweet, amazing for raw preparations; the long, 8-inch mature leaves are perfect for cooking. Less oxalic acid may also make it easier for your body to absorb calcium and iron from Monnopa than from varieties with higher oxalic acid. British seed company Thompson & Morgan released this wonderfully sweet spinach in 1982.

Growing Tips
Monnopa Spinach is a cool-season green known for its slow bolting and excellent flavor. Sow successively for a continuous harvest, and ensure plants get enough water to avoid bitter leaves. Light mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds during growth.
When to Grow
Plant Monnopa Spinach seeds in early spring or late summer to early fall for optimal yields. Cooler temperatures promote better leaf quality and slow bolting. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'
How to Sow and Plant
Prepare fine, loose soil enriched with compost. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, spaced 6 to 8 inches apart, in rows 12–18 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination for the best stand of young plants.
How to Grow
Thin seedlings to 6 inches apart if needed for best growth. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and consider shade cloth during unexpected heat waves. Harvest outer leaves first to allow continued production from the same plant.
How to Save
- Allow several plants to bolt and produce flowers.
- Wait until seed stalks dry and turn brown.
- Cut stalks and hang upside down in a dry, ventilated area.
- Collect seeds by shaking or threshing dried stalks.
- Store fully dried seeds in a cool, dark place in labeled containers.
FAQ
Is Monnopa Spinach slower to bolt than other varieties?
Yes, Monnopa Spinach is specially bred for slow bolting, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who want longer harvest windows in both spring and fall.
Can Monnopa Spinach tolerate a light frost?
Absolutely! Monnopa Spinach is frost-hardy and can survive light freezes, often becoming sweeter and more tender after exposure to chilly temperatures.
How often should I water Monnopa Spinach?
Water Monnopa Spinach deeply once or twice a week, adjusting for rainfall. Consistent moisture improves leaf quality and helps prevent premature bolting during warmer spells.
