Sterling Old German Tomato

Dr. Weaver acquired seed for this rare Mennonite heirloom from the late Merlyn D. Niedens (1934-2009), a seed collector and former life member of Seed Savers Exchange. Niedens discovered this unusual tomato among the Mennonites in Sterling, Illinois and it appears to be a local selection similar to its more famous cousin Brandywine, or more likely, to the original potato-leaf strain of Turner’s Hybrid released commercially in 1886. Whatever its precise genetic origin, Sterling Old German yields the same large, rose-pink fruit with the same familiar Brandywine taste, and the same tendency to crack in humid weather. That said this is a showcase tomato worth growing especially for gardeners who like slicing tomatoes for summer salads and tomato sauces with a rich fruity flavor.
