Stevia

(Stevia rebaudiana) A hard-to-find herb that is grown for the famous Stevia leaves which, when dried, are used to sweeten drinks and desserts. Much sweeter than sugar; stevia powder is reported to be 300 times sweeter! Not winter-hardy, except in zones 8-10. From Brazil and Paraguay. The chemical companies who make artificial sweeteners hate this plant and have tried to make it illegal. But I just love it!

What are the pros? Requires no maintenance

What are the cons? None

Review:

I’ve hesitated to write a review thinking that the perennial nature of my 4 stevia plants was a fluke, but spring 4 years on and I’m having to divide them. They have been moved from a plastic container that was left sitting out all winter, to a concrete sided planter left outside all winter, and then to a concrete sided raised bed; every year in a new location and moved in the spring. This spring they are going to their final destination, a bed made just for them because it appears they are as dedicated to this project as I am. One clump has grown so large that I must divide it. I’m dividing the others to spare the effort next spring. They are mulched by the adjacent ash tree with a nice layer of fallen leaves and I use my fingers to rake the leaves away after last frost to find sweet little leaves emerging from clumps and dozens of seedlings that I weed out. That’s all I do for them. I’m on Zone 7, tending toward 7b. This defies everything I’ve ever read of stevia.

What are the pros? 100% germination

What are the cons? Zero

Review:

After reading multiple articles across various websites, I was prepared for challenges with germination. Every seed I’ve started, 9 thus far, has germinated in less than 5 days! Will provide some additional feedback as the little sprouts grow up.

What are the pros? High germination rate

What are the cons? None.

Review:

This was my first time attempting to germinate stevia seeds. Reading around on the internet, it sounded like it would be nearly impossible or at best very poor germination rate. I ordered two packs of 15 seeds. Each came with 19 seeds. I planted a total of 38 seeds, and 35 germinated within only 6 days. That is excellent for any type of seed that I know of. I even had 5 seeds germinate after only 3 days. I would highly recommend these seeds especially after reading other horror stories around the internet.

What are the pros? Sweet, healthy, easy

What are the cons? After taste

Review:

I had to grow these for a class. I have never had a plant survive...I bought a light and a little starter dirt kit. Watered everyday. After three weeks I saw little seeds opening. I planted in September but I kept them inside. Now in December one of my 4 surviving plants is turning into a bush. Once we started eating it, it stated growing like crazy. They are very sweet. My 5 yr old asks for leaves for dessert sometimes lol ...you get used to the after taste after a while
