Stevia

(Stevia rebaudiana) A hard-to-find herb that is grown for the famous Stevia leaves which, when dried, are used to sweeten drinks and desserts. Much sweeter than sugar; stevia powder is reported to be 300 times sweeter! Not winter-hardy, except in zones 8-10. From Brazil and Paraguay. The chemical companies who make artificial sweeteners hate this plant and have tried to make it illegal. But I just love it!

What are the pros? Germination Rate

What are the cons? None

Review:

I planted in a small 8 inch pot, I only have container plants as I live in the city, and I expected to wait a long time for germination, as I usually do. Troy is cold, windy and generally not the best place to grow plants, but they germinated in three days and I have to hope that they continue to do so well.

What are the pros? All seeds germinated

What are the cons? Only 2 survived

Review:

Great plant but hard to grow. This is my second year trying this plant. I did not get my seeds here last year and they did not germinate. All of these seeds germinated but only 2 of the plants survived. Early on, they tend to dampen off and are very particular. Once you finally get them established they are not so hard and pruning them periodically will help them to bush out. I am going to dig mine up and try to overwinter them indoors since they are so hard to get started. Mine have yet to go to seed so I don't expect to be able to start any new plants without purchasing new seeds.

What are the pros? All of rhe seeds germinated!

What are the cons? Most dampened off & died!

Review:

It is a good thing i was able to get all of the seeds to germinate! Most of them dampened off and died though. I really love the plant but it is hard to keep it alive. I really wish that Baker Creek would send good instructions with the seeds and how to sprout/grow them with detail. I would recommend you do LOTS of research on how to start and grow these plants if you want to be successful.

What are the pros? Requires no maintenance

Review:

I’ve hesitated to write a review thinking that the perennial nature of my 4 stevia plants was a fluke, but spring 4 years on and I’m having to divide them. They have been moved from a plastic container that was left sitting out all winter, to a concrete sided planter left outside all winter, and then to a concrete sided raised bed; every year in a new location and moved in the spring. This spring they are going to their final destination, a bed made just for them because it appears they are as dedicated to this project as I am. One clump has grown so large that I must divide it. I’m dividing the others to spare the effort next spring. They are mulched by the adjacent ash tree with a nice layer of fallen leaves and I use my fingers to rake the leaves away after last frost to find sweet little leaves emerging from clumps and dozens of seedlings that I weed out. That’s all I do for them. I’m on Zone 7, tending toward 7b. This defies everything I’ve ever read of stevia.

What are the pros? 100% germination

What are the cons? Zero

Review:

After reading multiple articles across various websites, I was prepared for challenges with germination. Every seed I’ve started, 9 thus far, has germinated in less than 5 days! Will provide some additional feedback as the little sprouts grow up.
