(Malpighia punicifolia L.) Also known as acerola, this prolific shrub is a widely adaptable and easy to grow fruit tree, perfect for the beginner subtropical fruit grower! A Caribbean crop that is native to the lesser Antilles from St. Croix to Trinidad into South America down to Brazil and is hardy from USDA hardiness zones 9b to 11. The bright red fruit is superlative for fresh snacking. The flavor is similar to cherry, excellent frozen in desserts and processed into baby foods in Puerto Rico. An excellent edible landscaping shrub that averages 5.5-9 feet tall and is popular for planting an edible hedgerow. The trees can withstand heavy pruning and therefore can be kept small as an indoor potted tree. Please consider these terms before ordering live plants: Most plants will be 3”-7” in height.
