Chives

(Allium schoenoprasum) A perennial member of the onion family, chives are enjoyed for their flavorful leaves and beautiful (and edible!) flowers. Try growing them in containers or as a border plant for herb and vegetable gardens. Seeds take 7-14 days to germinate. Sow them 1/4 inch deep; the ideal soil temperature is 60-70F. Direct seed after chance of frost has just passed or you can start them indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost and transplant out. Seeds can be sown in 1-inch clusters of about 3-4 seeds, placed about 4-6 inches apart.
