Lovage

(Levisticum officinale) Lovage is a perennial member of the Apiaceae, or carrot, family. With its edible leaves, roots and seeds, this tall, leafy plant is a culinary treat. Allow plants to bloom and you will be rewarded with tons of pollinators and beneficial insects. Plants are hardy from USDA zones 4 to 8. It has been cultivated in Europe since ancient times. Lovage is a perennial that flowers annually beginning in its second year. Direct seed in fall or early spring. Alternatively, you can start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Ideal germination temperature is 60-70F. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep. Seeds germinate in 10-14 days. It prefers full sun to part shade and rich, moist soil. Plants reach four to six feet tall; space them two to three feet apart.
