Salad Blends

(Brassica spp. & Latuca Sativa. and more) Salad blends offer deep nutrition and a super quick growth habit -- many successions can be planted in a single season. We offer cold-hardy mixes, from lettuce salad blends of latica varieties and Asian mixes, which are comprised of brassica varieties, and a European mesclun mix, which combines lettuce species, arugula, chicories, corn salad and brassicas. Despite the varying varieties, you can follow these same steps for successful germination and growing. Ideal germination temperature is 60-75 F. Planting depth is 1/8 inch. Seeds germinate in 5-14 days. Salad blends are best grown in blocks or thick bands; sow the seed fairly densely as the plants will be harvested in just about 25-30 days when they are short and tender. You can sow the seeds every 2 weeks for a continuous supply. Salad blend mix can be grown in full sun to part shade, kept well watered until germinated. Aim to keep the plants sheltered from extreme heat as they will become bitter and bolt. Shade cloth can help, though you will want to halt planting during the peak hottest part of the season and resume in late summer into fall, and even over the winter. An excellent choice for winter gardening/farming. When harvesting be sure to cut above the plant's base to allow regrowth.
