Description

(Fragaria × ananassa). This British variety bears medium-large, super scrumptious berries in abundance. This compact plant will produce berries in the first year from seed. Fruit is much larger than alpine varieties. These tidy plants are perfect in beds and containers; they do not readily set runners and remain tame, not prone to taking over the garden. Berries are more firm than alpine varieties; the flavor however, is better than many other large, commercial varieties.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Temptation strawberries are a delicious, everbearing variety known for their sweetness and ornamental beauty. These compact plants thrive in containers, raised beds, and traditional gardens. For best results, provide consistent moisture and well-draining soil enriched with compost. Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous fruiting.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your area’s last expected frost. In warmer climates, seeds can be sown outdoors in early spring. Temptation strawberries need a long growing season, so early indoor sowing is ideal. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow Temptation strawberry seeds on the surface of moist seed-starting mix and press gently—do not bury. Light is required for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain temperatures around 65–70°F. Germination can take 14–28 days. Once seedlings have true leaves, thin and transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden after all frost danger has passed.

How to Grow

Plant strawberries in nutrient-rich, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–6.5) with excellent drainage. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a balanced, organic fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing season. Water deeply and regularly, especially during fruiting. Harvest ripe berries promptly to encourage continuous production throughout the season.

How to Save

  • Allow a few berries to fully mature and overripen on the plant.
  • Mash the berries and soak them in water for several days to ferment and loosen seeds.
  • Rinse the seeds and allow them to dry completely on a paper towel.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in a labeled envelope or airtight container until next season.
