Amazingly prolific, produces clusters of tender, straight pods suitable to be used as snaps. Pods can reach 18 inches in length and are fine for freezing. Seeds can also be used as shell beans or when dried. Brilliant scarlet flowers are an attractive bonus! Very popular European variety.

Review:

Planted 4 arches with these. They grow quickly and fill beautifully. I didn't use them for fresh eating much, there are other beans I prefer. The flowers are both beautiful and well loved by wildlife. Dried beans are where it's at for me! I pick the pods when they get wrinkly and wilted, but are still greenish. I tried to leave some pods to dry on the vine (like field shelling beans) but the pods started to mold and deteriorate. As long as I picked the shriveled pods consistently I got good beans and the plants continued to yield. Beans taste like kidney beans, is great for goulash.

Review:

Once these pop out of the ground, they are off and running. Produce very long vines, medium sized leaves and lots and lots of red flowers and pods. Each pod had 3-8 large beans inside which are very beautiful. If you take them out early, they're hot pink at first but fade to purple/black with pink speckles as they dry. I've tried to include these in a couple of recipes but the beans have a very gritty pasty texture. The pods are very thick and seem like they'd be too stringy/leathery to eat. I'd love ideas on how to use these if anyone has them. I'll grow them again for their ease and beauty, but I've about given up on trying to find a way to eat them.

Review:

Hubby and I finally figured out the variety of Mum's seeds that she had when she passed away in 1999, they happened to be these! I have good skills in sprouting old seeds but I wanted to hedge my bets just in case so I bought a packet. Can't wait for them to arrive. In the off chance I can't get Mum's 15 year old seeds, brought over from England over 40 years ago, she continued to grow them, I will be growing your packet of seeds. The seeds we have are from a strain that has been grown in hubby's family for over 100 years! I truly hope Mum's do sprout but if they don't I have yours on their way now. If we can't get Mum's to grow at least we have the same variety on their way now. Thank you for selling these!
