Growing Tips

Myanmar Purple is an heirloom sweet potato that thrives in warm weather, full sun, and well-draining soil. These sweet potatoes are not grown from seed but from live plants (slips). When your rooted slips arrive, hydrate them by soaking the roots in water or wrapping them in a damp paper towel before planting. Since sweet potatoes are cold-sensitive, you can pot them up and keep them in a protected area until all risk of frost has passed, or plant them directly if your region’s last frost date has already passed.

When to Grow

Plant this long-season crop outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed, when soil temperatures are at least 60 F. In northern climates, using black plastic mulch helps warm the soil and speeds up growth. Since they are frost-sensitive, check your local area’s last frost date before planting. If you’re not sure how to do that, consult our blog postOur Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.’

How to Sow and Plant

Plant slips 12-18 inches apart in raised beds or rows. Plant slips 2-3 inches deep, making sure that the roots and lower stem are buried while keeping the leaves above soil level. Mulching with black plastic or a thick layer of straw is key for suppressing weeds. Space rows 3-4 feet apart to allow room for the vines to spread. Water well after planting to help the slips establish.

How to Grow

Make sure young plants get 1-2 inches of water per week, especially during dry periods. As the vines spread and mature, they become more drought-tolerant, so you can reduce watering to every few days. Avoid fertilizing with too much nitrogen, as it will encourage excessive vine growth rather than root development. Harvest 90-120 days after planting, when the leaves begin to yellow and die back.

How to Save

  • Sweet potatoes are not propagated by seeds, but rather by saving tubers over the winter in a cool, dark place to replant the following spring.

  • Be sure to select the most healthy tubers for replanting.
