What are the pros? EVERYTHING

What are the cons? low germ. rate

Review:

I had a pretty cruddy germination rate (2 seeds of the whole bag grew).. but BOY did they grow! Holy moly! They started in early spring and are STILL growing on oct 8th even AFTER we had a couple of frosts. They STILL look amazing and I've collected scads of seeds for next year. I got two unbelievably beautiful plants... but at over 5 feet tall (one plant) and over 4 foot for the other one... they out did my other plants rather significantly. Next year, I will be planing them all over my yard and in all five of my gardens. Maybe even with the field pumpkins/gourds as they competed shockingly well with my squash. Everyone loved them!

What are the pros? Possibly keeps birds away

What are the cons? None really

Review:

I made a possible connection about my strawflowers being planted by my blackberries. I have had absolutely no problem with birds stealing my blackberries this year. My strawflowers are planted right alongside them. I'm thinking the birds don't like the sound of the strawflowers hitting against each other. I'm thinking about planting strawflowers among my tomatoes, so when they begin to turn red, I don't have to pick them to keep them free of birds putting holes in them. Right now it is just a theory, but worthy of a good test. Gardening is filled with experiments!!

What are the pros? Fun

What are the cons? None

Review:

I just wanted to add to my previous review from February. My straw flowers have grown to over 5 1/2 feet! They are blooming profusely. Everyone loves them and I always make people touch them. They are great cut flowers and last a couple of weeks. I've been harvesting the seeds to share with friends. My mother in law must have raved about them to others because both of her daughters ordered her seeds -- one is a dwarf variety, which would look nicer in most home gardens. My plants produce bright yellow, dark pink, white, and a salmon color that ages to a paler yellow.

What are the pros? Fun

What are the cons? Took a long time to bloom

Review:

These are fun. I started growing later in the season (because I don't have a large yard and something else had grown there) and they actually finally bloomed in January! They have lived through a couple of light freezes. All that have bloomed so far are a dark pinkish red color and truly don't seem real. I had to show them to so many people and everyone was so taken by them and wanted me to show others. The plant really looks like a weed before it bloomed, but I let it alone and am so glad I was patiently impatient!!

What are the pros? Easy, colorful, prolific

What are the cons? None

Review:

I sprinkled the seeds directly in the garden and, with little work, grew pretty strawflowers. The flowers were red, pink, yellow, and white. They grew to 4 ft tall. Make sure you cut the flowers earlier than you think you need to if you are drying them because they will continue to open when they are drying.
