Tamboura Melon

Our original seed came from the farmer’s market in Limassol, Cyprus where only a few growers on the island offer it for sale. This extremely rare and ancient melon takes its unusual name from the fact that its shape resembles a tamboura, a Byzantine stringed instrument with a melon-shaped belly. Depicted in ancient mosaics, this is one of the oldest documented heirloom melons from this region. With sweet white flesh reminiscent of honey dew melons or ripe yellow apples, the scent is aromatic and floral. The dark yellow skin is flecked and ribbed with patches of orange, brown and green. Very much a desert melon in need of baking heat and low humidity for best flavor, but with good irrigation around the roots, fruits can attain the size of 8 to 10 inches in diameter. Considered a connoisseur’s melon in Cyprus, this one stands in a class of its own.
