Tokiwa "Tokyo Green" Cucumber

An old Japanese variety, also known as “Tokyo Green” that came from China in the Meiji era, then became the dominant variety sold around Tokyo. A supremely sweet, bitter free 9” cuke with tender skin and few seeds. Mentioned in the 1932 edition of the Oriental Seed Company, “The vines attain twice the length of common varieties.” They do well on fences and trellises, saving space in the gardens. Vines are almost mildew proof and well adapted to hot, dry summers. Small fruit makes excellent pickles and set the standard for slicing cucumbers; buttery soft and sweet, never bitter.

What are the pros? No powdery mildew, prolific

What are the cons? Aphids

Review:

One of the best cucumber varieties I have grown! I have not had any issues with powdery mildew with this variety and it grows quickly once the weather warms up. The cucumbers are crunchy and sweet. I can eat them either raw or lightly sauteed and both methods produce really tasty dishes. Only issue I had was with aphids early on, but I have not seen them lately.

This did very well compared to most varieties I've tried. Produced long and the fruit was delicious. Will be doing it again this year.

What are the pros? production

What are the cons? none

Review:

This is the most amazing cucumber! It produces like none I've ever grown and for a longer season than any other. The veggies are large and the seeds are minimal. After growing numerous different varieties, this will be the only cucumber I grow in 2019!

Review:

These did extremely well in the Vegas heat this summer. Planted in late March and 4 vines produced well into October. Even in 115 heat these cukes showed no sign of slowing down. Very sweet, one of the best tasting cucumbers I have ever had. Will replant every year!

What are the pros? heat tolerant

What are the cons? none at this time

Review:

Just harvested the first fruits... after 10 days of 100 heat. Cukes were excellent.... not even a hint of bitterness, refreshing cucumber flavor, tender and crisp. Also, no trouble with squash bugs that were on other cucurbits in close proximity. This is the cucumber variety I've been searching for...
