What are the pros? Quick, crunchy, prolific
What are the cons? Nothing
Grows very quickly, doesn't bolt until the hot, hot summer heat when I planted them in spring. Adds great texture and dimension to dishes and salads, often the defining difference between an average and phenomenal salad. Also not sensitive to being yanked out and replanted elsewhere, and very resistant to lots of bugs but I did get a few holes on the outer leaves from slugs and I had to check daily that ear-wigs weren't hidden in the wrinkles and layers of the head just in case - their feces cause a bigger problem to these than their eating did, for me. Some days I've eaten an entire head of Tom Thumb with dinner, but when I do I yank the whole plant, cut it just above the root so the head stays together, and replanted the root for seconds, which comes in leafy instead of compact.
