Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Aunt Ruby's German green tomato requires plenty of sunlight—at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant this variety in well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter to support its growth. Since the vines are indeterminate and produce heavy fruits, provide sturdy cages or stakes to keep the plants upright and the fruits off the ground.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Once the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 60 F, transplant the seedlings outdoors. Under ideal conditions, the fruits typically mature about 85 days after transplanting, providing a steady supply of large, green tomatoes throughout the growing season.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep in a sterile seed-starting mix. Keep the soil temperature between 80-90 F to encourage germination, which takes 7-14 days. After germination, grow seedlings under bright light to prevent leggy growth. Once seedlings develop strong roots and multiple leaves, transplant them into larger containers. Space them about 24 inches apart to make sure they have enough room to grow.

How to Grow

Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost when transplanting and side-dress during the growing season. Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Monitor for pests like aphids and caterpillars, and inspect regularly for signs of fungal diseases such as blight. Harvest fruits when they take on a slight yellowish-green hue and feel slightly soft to the touch.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
