Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). This recent Brad Gates introduction was selected from a cross between ‘Beauty King’ and a blue tomato. Fruit is a modest beefsteak-type slicer, weighing up to 8 ounces, and the flavor is as good as its outstanding antioxidant content! Gorgeous, deep blue-black shoulders make this unique among slicing types. Excellent potential for market, as the fruit holds well on the vine. Sunburn and crack resistance are a welcome bonus.

Growing Tips

Blue Beauty tomatoes thrive in full sun with well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. As an indeterminate variety, these plants grow tall and will need staking or caging to support the vines and their medium-sized fruits.  Learn More >>

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed, and temperatures stay above 60 F, usually late spring to early summer.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix. During germination, keep the soil temperature between 70-80 F using a heat mat if necessary. Transplant seedlings after hardening off, spacing plants about 24 inches apart in rows spaced 3-4 feet apart for proper air circulation.

How to Grow

Mulch plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular pruning of suckers enhances airflow and directs the plant's energy toward fruit production. Fertilize every 2-4 weeks with a balanced or low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage strong fruit development. Monitor for pests like aphids or caterpillars, and address issues promptly with organic controls.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and crossing isn’t likely; separating by 25 feet is sufficient for pure seed, except for the potato-leaf varieties like Brandywine.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for 1-2 days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
