Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). A supreme snacking tomato, this little jewel is loaded with sugar and fruitiness. This is one of the best-tasting tomatoes of all time. The cherry-sized fruit is a beautiful, translucent kiwi green in color. Large vines produce huge yields of these crisp, little cherries. Harvest when the fruit is slightly soft for the sweetest taste. Named after Dr. Amy Goldman and the late Dr. Carolyn Male.

Growing Tips

Green Doctors tomatoes prefer full sun and fertile, well-draining soil. They produce high yields of sweet, small green tomatoes, perfect for salads. As an indeterminate type, they need a trellis or cage for support due to their vining growth habit. Prune regularly to maintain airflow and support fruit development.  Learn More >>

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant the seedlings outdoors only when nighttime temperatures don’t drop below 50 F. Check your local frost dates to ensure optimal planting time, as Green Doctors are particularly sensitive to cold.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds at a depth of about 1/8 inch in a seed-starting tray. Maintain a soil temperature of 75-95 F for optimal germination, which happens in around 7-14 days. Space plants 24 inches apart when transplanting outdoors to give them room to grow. For strong root development, plant seedlings deeply, burying the stem up to the first set of leaves.

How to Grow

Green Doctors tomatoes require consistent moisture but should not be waterlogged. Water at the base of the plant to prevent disease, and mulch around the base to retain soil moisture. Apply a balanced fertilizer regularly, particularly once the plants start to flower and set fruit. If growing in containers, make sure that they are large enough and provide additional water, as pots can dry out faster.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and crossing isn’t likely; separating by 25 feet is sufficient for pure seed, except for the potato-leaf varieties like Brandywine.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for 1-2 days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored at room temperature, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.

FAQ

Are Green Doctors tomatoes suitable for beginner gardeners?

What color are Green Doctors tomatoes when ripe?
They remain green when fully ripe, with a slight yellowish tint, which can be confusing at first. This unique coloring is why they’re often called "green-when-ripe" tomatoes
