Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

The Lucky Tiger tomato grows best in full sun and well-draining, rich soil. To support its vining growth, use a trellis or tomato cage. Pruning the plant regularly helps increase airflow and encourages healthy fruit production.

When to Grow

Begin seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before your last expected frost date. Transplant outdoors when the danger of frost has passed. Under ideal growing conditions, it generally takes 70-75 days from transplanting to reach maturity, making it suitable for both early and mid-season planting.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep. The best temperature for optimal germination is 75-95 F. When seedlings develop their first true leaves, transplant them to individual pots, and later, space them 24 inches apart in the garden. For container gardening, use a deep container and nutrient-rich soil.

How to Grow

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Deep watering at the base helps to promote a strong root system. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Fertilize with a balanced tomato feed every few weeks, especially during flowering and fruiting.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.

FAQ

Can Lucky Tiger tomatoes be grown in containers?
Yes, they can be successfully grown in large containers as long as they receive full sun and are given adequate support for their vining habit.

Are Lucky Tiger tomatoes disease-resistant?
While they have a strong growth habit, they are not specifically bred for disease resistance, so maintaining good airflow and proper watering is important to prevent issues like blight.

How large do Lucky Tiger plants grow?
As indeterminate plants, they can grow up to 6-8 feet tall with proper support, making them suitable for trellises or tall tomato cages.
