Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Sweet, rich and flavorful with strong citrus overtones make this a favorite eating variety each season. We just cannot get enough of the sweet, luscious, glowing orange icicle-like fruit that is like an extra-long paste tomato. This variety also makes a lovely orange ketchup and a superb salsa. It was a definite winner, and plants were quite productive. In our opinion, this is some of Ukraine’s finest tomato breeding. The fruits have relatively few seeds.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Orange Icicle tomatoes thrive in full sun with well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Water evenly without avoiding waterlogging; drip irrigation is ideal for keeping foliage dry and reducing the risk of disease. Use sturdy stakes or cages to manage the indeterminate vines and heavy fruit.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and temperatures remain above 60 F. Check your local frost-free dates. In cooler regions, using row covers or a greenhouse can extend the growing season and enhance productivity.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep in a quality seed-starting mix. Keep the temperature between 70-80 F during germination. You can use a heat mat to help keep the soil warm if necessary. Transplant seedlings with two sets of true leaves into the garden, spacing plants 24 inches apart for good airflow and growth.

How to Grow

Prune the plants by removing the small side shoots to focus energy on fruit production. Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and side-dress with additional compost or fertilizer throughout the season. Use organic mulch around the base of the plants to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases, taking appropriate measures to maintain healthy plants.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
