Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). This is a true garden oddity; the fruit is perfectly peachy in color, with even a lightly fuzzy skin to match! A delicious reminder of the fun of heirloom gardening, this imitation peach is nutritious and has a splendidly sweet flavor! The original peach tomato is an old French variety called Yellow Peach. It was used to make a marmalade that was a convincing substitute for the real thing! The Orange Peach, which we find even more peachy was found growing in the tomato patch of Pennsylvania farmer and heirloom expert James Weaver. We are sure glad that he saved and shared this variety. Its fantastic flavor and gorgeous looks make it a favorite here at Baker Creek! The fruit ranges in size from golf ball to tennis ball, with peach color, and fuzzy skin!

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Plant in full sun with rich, well-draining soil. Water consistently but be careful to avoid waterlogging. Orange Peach tomatoes are indeterminate and might need staking or caging to support their growth. Prune suckers to improve airflow and direct energy toward fruit production.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant outdoors after the last frost, when temperatures stay above 60 F. Check your local frost dates to time seed starting.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix indoors at 70-80 F for best germination. You can use a heat mat to help keep the soil warm. Provide 6-8 hours of light daily. Harden off seedlings for 7-10 days before transplanting, spacing them 24 inches apart. This gives the plants enough room to grow and allows for good air circulation.

How to Grow

Water deeply 1-2 times weekly, depending on rainfall, and mulch to retain moisture. Use a balanced fertilizer during planting and a phosphorus-heavy fertilizer when fruiting begins. Provide sturdy supports to manage the plant's growth and prevent fruit from touching the ground.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
