Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). This famously tasty, brick-red tomato from Russia has a cult-like following among seed collectors and tomato connoisseurs, who simply cannot get enough of its distinctive, smoky-sweet flavor. Moscow seedswoman Marina Danilenko shared it with Seed Savers Exchange founder Kent Whealy in the 1990s, when he was working to connect with breeders and seed savers in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. It is named in honor of famous opera singer Paul Robeson, star of the 1936 film “Showboat.” Robeson was an influential African American activist, artist, actor, and athlete of the early to mid-20th century. His support of pro-Soviet policies made him an icon in Russia but a target of the American government at home.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

To grow healthy Paul Robeson tomatoes, pick a location that receives full sun for 6-8 hours daily. Plant in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Maintain consistent moisture, watering at the base to prevent foliage diseases. As an indeterminate variety, Paul Robeson tomatoes will need staking or caging to support their vining growth habit.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and temperatures consistently stay above 60 F. In regions with shorter growing seasons, consider using row covers or planting in a greenhouse to extend the growing period. You can also use a heat mat to assist during germination.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix, maintaining a temperature of 70-80 F during germination. After hardening off, space the seedlings about 24 inches apart in the garden for proper airflow and room for growth.

How to Grow

Apply a balanced fertilizer during planting and side-dress during the growing season for better growth and fruit production. Prune by removing suckers to promote better airflow and focus the plant's energy on fruit development. Monitor for common pests like aphids and tomato hornworms, employing organic controls as necessary.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
