Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). This old German heirloom was offered in Philadelphia by the mid-1800s. The sweet, red 1-ounce fruits grow in large clusters. The name Riesentraube means “giant bunch of grapes” in German. This is likely the most popular small tomato with seed collectors, as many favor the rich, full tomato flavor that is missing in today’s cherry types. To top it all off, the large plants produce massive yields.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Riesentraube tomatoes grow best in full sun and nutrient-rich, deep soil. They are indeterminate, so they will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. In cooler climates, you can use a heat mat to help warm the soil and speed up germination.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Transplant outside once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. We recommend that you refer to your area’s frost dates for specific timing.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed trays and maintain a soil temperature of at least 70 F for germination, which takes about 7-14 days. Once seedlings develop true leaves, transplant them to individual pots, then harden them off before planting outdoors. Space plants about 24 inches apart in the garden.

How to Grow

Riesentraube tomatoes need regular watering and support from stakes or cages as they can grow to 6 feet tall. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer, and prune lower branches to improve airflow and reduce disease risk. Harvest when tomatoes are fully red and slightly firm.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
FAQ

How tall do Riesentraube tomato plants grow?
These indeterminate plants can grow 6 feet or more, so staking or caging is recommended for support.

Are Riesentraube tomatoes resistant to common tomato diseases?
They are moderately resistant but should be monitored for common issues like blight. Pruning lower leaves can help prevent disease by improving air circulation.

How do Riesentraube tomatoes taste?
Riesentraube tomatoes are sweet with a slight tang, making them excellent for fresh eating and salads.
