Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). These gorgeous globes have the luster and stunning color of a stained glass masterpiece. Its beauty is only outmatched by its flavor! The Sart Roloise tomato is bursting with sweet, fruity, and complex flavor with just the right acidity, owing its tropical flavor profile to its parentage. It is a cross of the White Wonder tomato, which lends pineapple sweet notes, and the Baby Blue tomato, which explains the deep indigo blue brushstrokes on the shoulders! This variety was bred by Roland Boulanger, Sart Eustache, Belgium. It is a large beefsteak type. The big, beautiful fruit averages an impressive 10-20 ounces each, with the most captivating color and sheen, making it a must-have for market gardeners, chefs, and anyone who loves a gourmet-flavored tomato with pizazz.

Growing Tips

Sart Roloise tomatoes thrive in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Make sure that the plants receive at least 6-8 hours of full sunlight daily. Consistent watering is also very important; maintain even soil moisture but avoid waterlogging to prevent diseases like blossom-end rot.  Learn More >>

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 60 F. This typically means late spring to early summer; check your local area’s frost dates for a precise planting time.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in a sterile seed-starting mix. Maintain a soil temperature between 70-80 F for optimal germination, which usually takes 7-14 days. Once seedlings develop two true leaves, transplant them into larger pots. Before moving them outdoors, harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Space plants 24 inches apart in the garden for good air circulation.

How to Grow

Sart Roloise tomatoes will need staking, caging, or trellising to manage their vining growth habit. Regularly prune by removing suckers (the shoots that develop between the stem and branches) to promote better air circulation and focus the plant's energy on fruit production. Apply a balanced fertilizer during planting and side-dress with compost or organic fertilizer every 3-4 weeks throughout the growing season.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and crossing isn’t likely; separating by 25 feet is sufficient for pure seed, except for the potato-leaf varieties like Brandywine.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for 1-2 days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
