Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Gourmandise Yellow is a rare heirloom cherry tomato variety that grows best in warm, sunny conditions. Plants prefer nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. If planting in pots, make sure they receive adequate moisture as soil can dry out quickly in pots during the hot summer sun.

When to Grow

Gourmandise Yellow tomatoes should be planted outdoors only after the last frost date in your region. Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last frost. To determine the ideal planting time, check your local region’s frost dates.

How to Sow and Plant

Start seeds indoors in a seed-starting mix, planting them 1/8 inch deep. Keep the temperature between 70-80 F until germination occurs; use a heat mat if necessary. Transplant seedlings outdoors when temperatures stay consistently above 60 F and the plants have 2-3 sets of true leaves. Space plants 24 inches apart.

How to Grow

Maintain consistent moisture without overwatering to prevent issues like cracking or blossom end rot. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a balanced or tomato-specific fertilizer. This compact variety generally doesn’t need support. Prune excess foliage to improve air circulation and focus energy on fruit production.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
