Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Sugar-sweet, crunchy and so delicious! This cherry tomato is packed with sweetness and a rich, berry-like flavor. These little snacking tomatoes hold well on the vine, allowing sugars to build up, making them extra sweet. Wildly productive, they grow well both outdoors and in greenhouses, producing long trusses of crack-resistant red fruit. Allow the fruit to ripen on the vine to a deep red for the very sweetest flavor, or pick earlier if you like it a bit more tangy; either way, it is superb! It proved productive and flavorful even in our cool winter greenhouses, with only 42 F degrees at night. These little strawberry-shaped jewels are a staff favorite.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Sweetheart cherry tomatoes grow best in full sun and deep, nutrient-rich soil. We recommend staking or caging as these tomatoes can grow up to 6 feet tall. In cooler climates, using a heat mat helps to warm the soil and speed up germination.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors about 6-10 weeks before the last frost date. After all risk of frost has passed and the soil temperature reaches at least 65 F, transplant seedlings outdoors. Harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting.

How to Sow and Plant

Plant seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed trays or pots with warm soil. Once seedlings develop true leaves, transplant them into larger containers or outdoors, keeping them spaced about 24 inches apart.

How to Grow

Sweetheart cherry tomatoes need consistent watering, ideally, 1-1.5 inches per week, while avoiding water on the foliage to reduce disease risks. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer that supports fruit production. Removing suckers and pruning lower leaves can help increase airflow, which improves overall plant health.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
