Description

(Solanum pimpinellifolium). A wild type. This super-sweet fruit has the highest sugar content of any tomato we know, about twice as sweet as many standard tomatoes. A favorite variety in our own garden! The fruit is tiny, barely an inch across, and creamy colored, with skins having a yellow tint. The candy-sweet fruit has a superb flavor. The fruit grows in clusters, and the yield is huge! We always have more than we can pick, right up to frost. The plants are large and vining. A perfect cherry for home and market gardeners alike.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

White Currant tomatoes are indeterminate, meaning they continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. This variety grows best in full sun and nutrient-rich, deep soil. In cooler climates, using a heat mat helps to warm the soil and speed up germination.

When to Grow

Begin seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed to at least 60 F. These tomatoes will mature in about 65-70 days from transplanting, if grown under ideal conditions.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep in seed trays with warm soil. Once seedlings have true leaves, space plants approximately 24 inches apart in the garden for good air circulation and growth. The best temperature for optimal growth is between 75 F and 95 F.

How to Grow

These tomatoes require regular watering and should be fertilized every 2-3 weeks. They tolerate a variety of growing conditions and are well-suited for both containers and ground planting. Removing suckers and pruning lower leaves helps improve airflow and reduce disease risks, especially as these plants grow quite tall, often reaching up to 6 feet.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
