(Solanum lycopersicum). We have grown this remarkable tomato for several years, and it has never disappointed. Developed in the 1920s by W. T. Woods & Sons of Richmond, Virginia, this tomato produces large 3- to 4-inch red fruit of perfect round shape. We are not certain whether this variety was developed as a canning tomato or as a dinner slicer because it makes the perfect BLT sandwich. That said, this tomato variety was created and bred in the Mid-Atlantic region, so it will thrive in our humid Midwestern summers and yield wildly off-the-books quantities of picture-perfect monster red tomatoes. This is an heirloom that needs to be brought back into mainstream creative regional cuisine. Plan on profitable harvests and juicy BLTs all summer.

Growing Tips

This heirloom variety thrives in full sun and well-draining, fertile soil. Because of its indeterminate growth habit, sturdy support such as staking or caging is very important to manage the plant and support the heavy fruits.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed. The temperature shouldn’t drop below 60 F. Consult local frost date calendars to determine the best planting time for your specific region.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep in quality seed-starting mix. Keep the soil temperature between 70-80 F for optimal germination; use a heat mat if necessary. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before transplanting them. Space plants 24 inches apart in well-draining, fertile soil.

How to Grow

Water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for tomatoes every few weeks during the growing season. Prune by removing suckers to direct energy toward fruit production and improve air circulation. Regularly monitor for pests and diseases, using appropriate control measures as needed.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
