(Solanum lycopersicum). A rare and unusual oddity. This sunny yellow fruit with blue shoulders is covered in a light peach fuzz! Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Wooly Kate tomatoes grow best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic pH (6.0–6.8). You can incorporate compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility. Plant in a location that receives full sun for 6-8 hours every day. Due to the plant’s indeterminate nature, using stakes or cages is needed to manage their growth and support fruit development.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6–10 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Transplant seedlings outdoors when temperatures consistently stay above 60 F. You can also use a heat mat to help keep the soil warm. Under ideal conditions, Wooly Kate tomatoes typically mature in about 75 days from transplanting.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in a moistened, well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil temperature between 70-80 F during germination. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors. Plant them deeply, burying two-thirds of the stem to promote strong root development. Space plants 24 inches apart, and water thoroughly after planting to establish roots.

How to Grow

Water consistently, aiming for about 1–2 inches of water per week. Water at the base to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease. Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost at planting time. Side-dress with compost or a balanced fertilizer as the first flowers form. Pruning is generally not necessary for Wooly Kate tomatoes, but removing any diseased or damaged foliage can promote better air circulation.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.

FAQ

Can Wooly Kate tomatoes tolerate cooler climates?
Wooly Kate tomatoes prefer warm conditions; however, they can also be grown in cooler climates if started indoors early and transplanted after the danger of frost has passed. Providing a sunny, sheltered location will also support growth.

Can I grow Wooly Kate tomatoes in containers?
Yes, but choose a large container (at least 20 inches deep and 24 inches wide) and provide sturdy support for the plant. Make sure that the container has good drainage as well.

How do I know when to harvest Wooly Kate tomatoes?
Harvest when the tomatoes have reached their full color and are slightly firm to the touch.
