What are the pros? Crown Jewel of summer!
What are the cons? wish I put in more
I had no idea how fabulously showy these would be. The pictures can't do these beauties justice. We have crummy, pure clay soil with a little road gravel mixed in but they love it. All the seeds took, so my 10 plugs each had 3 viable plants when it came time to transplant. I transplanted them in may on a north facing slope in full sun at the side of the driveway. Here in the hot, dry summer these enormous and rivetingly brilliant magenta crests are everyone's favorite. The stalks are an inch thick, healthy and strong even in wind. Bees and butterflies love them. Bugs don't seem to eat any part of them even with the bad Japanese beetles this year. They are knee-high and have combs up to a foot across on some plants. Side shoot combs are 3-4 inches across and they are completely maintenance free. I go out to enjoy them every single morning. I only wish I had put more in. Next year I'm buying more!
