What are the pros? Stripes, heat-tolerance, size
What are the cons? Split; cleaning seeds
This is a wonderful, large melon, with great production. It has white flesh, with a texture similar to firm watermelon. The flavor is gentle and sort of vanilla-like. There isn't much aroma at all. It's very sweet.
The fruits look awesome with their stripes, especially before they develop netting. I don't see any netting in pictures of it, but mine developed considerable netting.
I wouldn't have known if mine were ripe had it not split (the plant had a lot of foliage; so, I wasn't in the habit of checking the tendrils often). So, I guess I'm kind of glad it split. That one split today. I transplanted it kind of late, and we had a cooler spring than usual (still a hot, dry summer). Otherwise, it may have been ripe earlier.
The seeds are surrounded in massive amounts of gel. I can see why they're so expensive. I tried eating the gel and spitting the seeds out, which worked well, but the gel seems to have an enzyme in it like pineapple that made the roof of my mouth sore.
