(Curcuma caesia) Your order includes 3 plants. Turmeric is one of our favorite spices to grow and add to dishes; try this beautiful periwinkle to aquamarine-colored variety for extra pizazz! It is mostly used medicinally, but the flavor of blue turmeric is piney- almost minty, making it a fun addition to dishes in need of more pep. Grow blue turmeric just as you would the traditional orange kind. Plants will be 6-10" in height when shipped.

Growing Tips

Blue turmeric thrives in rich, well-draining soil with high organic content. This tropical rhizome prefers warm, humid conditions and consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause rot. In cooler climates, grow it in containers and bring it indoors before frost. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the active growing period to encourage vigorous growth.

When to Grow

Plant Blue turmeric in the spring after the risk of frost has passed and when soil has warmed to at least 70°F. In colder climates, it can be started indoors or in containers and moved outside once temperatures stabilize. In tropical climates, it can be planted throughout the year. How to Sow and Plant

Select a site with partial sunlight and well-draining, organic-rich soil. Plant the turmeric so that the base of the stem is at soil level. Maintain 12-18 inches of spacing between plants to allow airflow. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist. Avoid planting in areas prone to waterlogging, as this can cause rhizome rot.

How to Grow

Maintain consistent moisture by watering regularly, especially during dry spells. Apply a balanced fertilizer periodically for optimal growth. Mulch the plant's base to retain soil moisture and prevent weed competition. As the plant matures, it will develop broad leaves and produce bluish-purple rhizomes ready for harvest after approximately 8-10 months.

How to Save

  • Divide rhizomes from mature plants in spring or early summer
  • Choose healthy sections with at least one visible bud
  • Let cut surfaces dry for 1–2 days before planting in moist, well-draining soil
  • Ensure a warm, humid environment to promote sprouting
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged

FAQ

Is Blue Turmeric edible or medicinal?
It is both! Blue turmeric rhizomes are used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine and can be processed into powders or pastes. However, it’s more bitter and potent than common turmeric, so it’s not typically used in cooking except in dishes where you would want its minty taste.

Can Blue Turmeric grow indoors?
Yes, Blue Turmeric can thrive indoors if provided with sufficient warmth and humidity. Use a large container with drainage holes, position it in bright, indirect light, and keep the soil moist for best results.
