Big, beautiful, purple-black fruit are great for baking. This great variety comes from Ukraine and sets heavy yields on the 3’-4’ tall bushy plants. We like large eggplants breaded and baked, then served with spaghetti sauce.

What are the pros? Perfect size for two

What are the cons? Mild mite issues

Review:

This is the first eggplant variety that has worked for me in the southeast - and I wasn't expecting it to! By late June I have already harvested one and have 5 more growing on the two plants I have of this type. Mites have been a continual concern over the past few years, but this one made it through with only mild issues. If you garden without synthetic pesticides in the southeast USA, this is your eggplant (FYI - the Mitoyo variety I planted is also doing very well). These eggplants produce fruit a little bit bigger than a softball, which makes one eggplant perfect as a meat substitute for two during hot summer days. Taste is typically eggplant-y and texture is meaty. I love it!

What are the pros? Shape and color

What are the cons? nothing

Review:

Exceptional cultivar, out-survived many other heirloom cultivars under substandard conditions (lower temps and light, drought, etc etc); fruited all winter at 50 F in containers and I am talking many different separate plants. The fruit can get fairly big depending on root ball/pot size. Great flavor, very long lasting once picked, unparalleled beauty on par with Crimean black tomatoes.

Review:

I had about 3-4 fruits on one plant at once, large size and shaped like Black Beauty. The fruits are very pretty colored, lots of purple swirls. Fruits are not bitter, but has unique taste, lightly spicy. I used it for any every dish possible.
