Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Heatwave Raspberry vinca is a heat-tolerant variety that performs well in hot, sunny conditions. It thrives in well-draining soil and requires minimal care, making it ideal for beginner gardeners. For best growth and blooms, choose a location that receives 6-8 hours of full sun daily.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date or plant directly outdoors once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached 60 F. Vinca is sensitive to frost, so it’s best to wait until warmer temperatures prevail.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil or seed-starting mix. Keep the soil moist but not wet, with a temperature of 75-80 F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed a few leaves and outdoor temperatures have stabilized, transplant them 9-12 inches apart in the garden.

How to Grow

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding overwatering. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to encourage vibrant blooms. Vinca does not require deadheading, as it self-cleans and continues blooming through the season.

How to Save

  • Pinch seed pods off after flower petals drop and pods become brown in color.
  • Let the pods dry in a paper bag.
  • When the pods have dried, pop them open to remove the seeds.
  • Store in a cool, dry, and dark place until you are ready to plant.
