What are the pros? Grows fast, plentiful
What are the cons? Tough when too large
I got a large package of this chard, wanting to try something other than the Fordhook Giant. I like the Vulcan a lot..but yes, it seems to be exactly like beet greens...minus the beets. In fact, I planted a row of Vulcan Chard next to a row of Detroit Dark Red Beets and cannot tell the difference between them.
These greens are great to add in small quantities to salads, but once the leaves get too large, over 3 or 4 inches long, they become tougher to chew and not as enjoyable. Therefore it is wise to harvest them small and let them keep growing through April, May and June.
