Pansy

Winter Flowering Hiemalis Pansy

(Viola hiemalis) “Hiemalis” refers to wintertime in Latin, and these are a unique species, indeed flowering very early, which can in fact mean winter. The 6-7”’ tall plants flower freely, and the wide range of velvety pansy colors look so cheery, signaling the winter’s impending end. The plants bear smaller flowers than florist types; the blooms are about the size of Violas, but the variety carries its weight by its cold tolerance, blooming happily in 45 degree soil and shrugging off temps down to 6 degrees. Also called Ice Pansy.
