Description

(Zinnia elegans). These fantastic blooms were all the rage in the atomic age, mid-century America. We are so excited to be able to offer this streaked, striped and speckled beauty that produces loads of color over a long season. Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Peppermint Stick zinnias thrive in full sun and well-draining soil rich in organic matter. For better blooms, amend the soil with compost before planting. Consistent deadheading or cutting helps extend the flowering season, making them ideal for colorful cut flower displays.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors about 4 weeks before the last frost for early blooms, or sow directly outdoors once all frost risk has passed, as they are frost-sensitive. Soil temperatures around 75-80 F are best for optimal germination and growth.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and space them 9-12 inches apart for better air circulation, reducing mildew risk. These zinnias sprout quickly, usually within 4-6 days, making them a fast-growing choice for summer gardens. If starting indoors, use biodegradable pots or other means to minimize root disturbance when transplanting.

How to Grow

Peppermint Stick zinnias require moderate watering. Allow the soil to dry slightly between sessions to prevent overwatering. Light fertilization every few weeks supports healthy growth, and pinching young plants can encourage bushier blooms. These zinnias reach about 24-30 inches tall.

How to Save
  • Allow the flowerhead containing the seeds to mature and dry on the plant.
  • Clip off the flowerhead and place it in a paper bag or other container.
  • Working over the top of another clean, opened container, rub the flowerheads between the palms to break them apart.
  • The seeds can be separated from the chaff by first screening and then winnowing.
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place over winter.
