Astrakom Eggplant

Compact plants reached barely two feet in our trials. Each plant yielded several 4-inch, teardrop-shaped fruits, of a rich, glossy purple-black. Grown from seed provided by our Belorussian friend Andrey Baranovsky.

What are the pros? Hmm...

What are the cons? Everything about it just about

Review:

I have never seen something struggle so much to grow in my life. The plant itself continued to grow all year long, but by november it just had one dwarf fruit on it, barely as big as advertised. But hey, it survived almost 4 months of sitting there, whilst the plant did little else. I might try for it again in the future just to see if I can alter it, but for the now, it was a loss of resources, especially my time. I honestly want to give this a 1.5/5 stars, but thats not allowable lol :P

What are the pros? Strong, vigorous, productive

What are the cons? Can't complain!

Review:

This is my first season with this variety. I'm so pleased! I've just taken my first harvest and nearly every plant had 2-3 ready to harvest, 4" fruits. It won't be long until I can harvest again, as the plants are loaded with small fruits and blossoms. The fruits are beautiful and, although smaller than the huge types, are a nice size for the home kitchen. The plants are vigorous, and survived the flea beetle damage in their seedling stage. I'd recommend this variety to others, I'm in zone 5B and expect these plants to produce lots of fruit until the end of the season.

What are the pros? Easy to grow, first to produce

What are the cons? none

Review:

This eggplant has grown well for me in the challenging Texas climate. It grew and produced through floods, heat, and wind. It even survived summer hail. The plant is the same size as "Swallow" , my usual eggplant. The fruit is pudgier, but about the same length. The taste is similar, not bitter, and perfect to grill or saute. The Astrakom seems to hold longer after picking. I do find it more difficult to peel the Astrakom, but I usually leave the skin on, so that's not really an issue. The Astrakom outproduces the Swallow by quite a bit. I will grow this eggplant from now on.

What are the pros? Novice-proof.

What are the cons? Unaware of thorns, lol.

Review:

Yep, I was unaware eggplants have thorns on their caps. Now I know. These are tasty in ratatouille, which I had to try after watching the movie of the same name. I've never grown eggplant before, and these were pretty effortless. This year, my husband built me a heated sand bed for sprouting seeds in my little greenhouse to get a jumpstart on plants for the garden, and it worked out well. We had strong, healthy, heirloom plants to put in at planting time. Astrakom grew quietly in front of the tomatoes, having enjoyed the same dose of Epsom salts and non-fat dry milk in the planting holes, and I was elated to find purple blossoms and then purple eggplants on the plants like clockwork. We don't have a well, so if we water, it's sparing, because it's very expensive. Astrakom didn't care, and produced beautifully with just what fell from the sky. It's a repeat for next year, as is ratatouille.

Review:

These have done really well for me for 2 years. I direct sow them into raised garden boxes. Many blooms per plant and taste is delicious! I am a beginner gardener, but these I can't seem to mess up. Would highly recommend.
