Aubergine Du Burkina Faso Eggplant

(S. aethiopicum) A unique heirloom from Burkina Faso, West Africa, featuring a tall plant, beautiful enough for the flower garden, which produces many good-sized, red-ribbed fruit. The fruit is wrinkled, flat, and (some think) somewhat bitter and strong flavored.

What are the pros? Looks great, fun, unique

What are the cons? No fruit by Sep 18th, aphids

Review:

The plants grew fine, and tall with nice leaves. They grew flowers. However, they never formed fruit. It's probably because I live probably less than an hour from the Oregon High Desert, and we had a particularly desert-style year with a record-breaking 116? F. in June (whereas late July and early August are usually the really hot periods, and the hottest I've known it then was 113?). Night-time temperatures are usually at least 30? cooler than the daytime highs. I didn't know it when I got these seeds, but it's best to plant plants that are heat, cold, drought and clay tolerant in my area. The plants were shaded a little too heavily, too. Aphids liked these plants, a lot. They didn't seem to like the calcium nitrate (fertilizer) that I later sprayed on the leaves, though, but the ladybugs didn't mind. The plants have varying traits (fuzzy or smooth leaves, red or green stems). The plant probably prefers more sun and a more temperate climate. Maybe more phosphorus than it got.

What are the pros? will grow again

What are the cons? can only eat young

Review:

This is super yucky red. Not meant to be eaten at full maturity. Pick at 2-3 inch size around. You will enjoy many many young tender eggplants. Let them turn red and spongy for seed saving.

What are the pros? Unique plant, great flavor

What are the cons? Smaller than I expected

Review:

These are charming little vegetables; the plant was very successful in my Wisconsin garden and I ended up roasting most of the produce from this variety. Really good taste, it is not just a novelty plant!
