Growing Guide

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors about 10 weeks before your last frost date, and move plants outdoors once frost danger has passed. Surface sow the seed and keep it moist until germination, which takes 10 to 30 days. Space the 2-foot plants 8 inches apart in full sun with well-drained soil. Figure 90 to 120 days from sowing to those long-lasting blue flower spikes.

How to Sow and Plant

  • Seeds germinate in 7-14 days.
  • Start seeds indoor 10-12 weeks before last frost. Press seeds gently into soil but do not cover, as light aids germination.
  • Ideal germination temperature is 65-75 F.

How to Grow

  • Prefers full sun to part shade.
  • Provide well-drained soil; plants do not like excessive moisture.
  • Space plants 12-18 inches apart.

PESTS/SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Molds and mildews can be a result of poorly drained soil and water on foliage. To prevent this, provide well-drained, dry soil.
  • If slugs are an issue, be sure to sprinkle diatomaceous earth or crushed eggshells around the base of the plant.

How to Save Seeds

  • Salvia readily self seeds in the garden, but you can also save seeds.
  • Several nutlets are borne at the base of flowers. Each nutlet contains a single seed.
  • Allow nutlets to dry, and harvest them before they drop to the ground.

FAQ

Is Blue Monday Sage a perennial?

No, it is an annual, so sow fresh seed each season. Salvia does readily self seed in the garden.

My seed has not come up yet. What is wrong?

Probably nothing. This variety takes 10 to 30 days to germinate. Sow the seed barely covered, about 1/16 inch deep, and keep the soil evenly moist the whole time.

How far apart should Blue Monday plants go?

Eight inches apart, in full sun with well-drained soil and mild humidity. Soggy soil and water sitting on the foliage can bring on molds and mildews, so provide well-drained, dry soil.

What gardeners are saying

  • Bee magnet: Bees and other pollinators work the spikes all season long.

  • Quick to germinate: Sprouts in days with near-total germination; easy from seed.

  • Color lasts for months: Purple spikes hold their color from spring until frost.

  • Tough in dry sun: Handles full sun, dry soil and swings in weather with ease.

  • Good to know: The color comes from purple bracts; the true flowers are tiny.
