85 days. An heirloom introduced by Burpee's in 1886 and was very popular for years, but now it has become rare. The fruit have green rinds and luscious, sweet orange flesh; 2 1/2 lbs each.

What are the pros? It survived

What are the cons? Still a melon and they finicky

Review:

It lived and produced melons. I am around 4,000 ft at the base of a mountain that goes up to 9,000 ft and which messes with the weather sometimes and causes chilly nights down in 30's even in July. First melon I ever seen actually produce in this valley. (I did start it in a seed pot indoors) planted it in the garden 1st of June and had melons mid August. frost hit it a couple times, but it pulled through. Not big melons, but that helps it be a healthy plant and the melons were very sweet.

What are the pros? Easy to Grow, Productive

What are the cons? Clustered ripening

Review:

I have been growing Emerald Gem melons for two years here in NE Ohio. This variety is both delicious and productive - last summer (2013) I had eleven ripe melons from four plants (two hills). My only complaint is that the melons ripened in quick succession from mid-to-late August. In fact, I had five ripen in one day! Very good variety overall - will definitely plant again.

What are the pros? sweetest and best flavor

What are the cons? small melons

Review:

I grew several varieties in 2013 and this was by far the best. BUT! after first pickings, abnormal rainfall caused most all of every variety to rot in the field and those we salvaged had no taste due to water content, not the melons fault. This year it's Emerald Gem #1, Hales Best #2 and pray for normal rainfall.

What are the pros? Scent, juiciness, yeild

What are the cons? Not very sweet

Review:

I knew these were ripe when I could smell them from across the yard! The flavor is very melony and strong, and it's incredibly juicy, but the sweetness just isn't there. I had to put a little but of sugar on top to really bring out the richness of the flavor. That said, I enjoyed them a lot and there was plenty of melons from just a small patch, so I plan on growing them again next year.

What are the pros?

What are the cons?

Review:

This is the first time I've grown melons, and these didn't disappoint - they spread out all over the garden and kept producing in 100+ temperatures - and they were delicious! Will definately grow again.
