Old Austrian heirloom, the name means "speckled like a trout"; a superb, gorgeous romaine lettuce that is highly splashed in deep red. Very beautiful and tasty.

My favorite lettuce, for over 10 years! This lettuce is prolific, beautiful and tasty. It is also self-seeding!

What an excellent lettuce! Easy growing tall romaine type that both looks and tastes great. I'll be planting this again.

What are the pros? Not bitter, doesn't bolt

What are the cons? Not crisp

Review:

Despite the fact I prefer crispier lettuce, I will grow this one and Devil's Ear every year. It's mid-July in northern CO and I have NEVER had the delight of eating a homegrown tomato (Large Barred Boar) and homegrown lettuce in a salad together. It's also beautiful. Good flavor, no sign of bitterness or bolting yet.

What are the pros? excellent flavor

What are the cons? none

Review:

This lettuce was not in the least bitter even when the weather got unseasonably warm. It has handled the heat much better than I expected. I planted a 4 x 4 bed full of this lettuce, and my family of 6 has been eating lettuce every day for more than 6 weeks and are still having to share with the neighbors as it grew as quickly as we could eat it. Love the red speckles. Will be planting this every year.

What are the pros? Good germination, delicious

What are the cons? None

Review:

A beautiful addition to our salad bowl the last two years. Sowed thickly very early in the year and kept thinning as the plants started to head. Even when the weather started getting warmer and my other lettuces' taste began to become bitter, forellenschluss was still lovely and mild.
