Old Austrian heirloom, the name means "speckled like a trout"; a superb, gorgeous romaine lettuce that is highly splashed in deep red. Very beautiful and tasty.

What are the pros? A beautiful, unusual lettuce

What are the cons? none

Review:

This is my favorite of the new lettuce varieties I've tried this year. It is growing in a bed I can see from my kitchen window and looks lush and delightful from there. In salads, it is stunning and utterly unlike anything I could purchase in a grocery store, and the flavor is superb. Texture likewise is very pleasing, delicate without being limp. I have these bedded close together and am harvesting two or three young plants at a time for dinner, leaving space for undersized shaded companions to fill in the space. It is now July (not a very hot one so far), and these plants with half-day sun have shown no sign of bolting.

Review:

This lettuce was the success story of this year's crop. It's super easy to grow, with a taste reminiscent of butter lettuce, and is perfect for salads and sandwiches. What's not to like?

What an excellent lettuce! Easy growing tall romaine type that both looks and tastes great. I'll be planting this again.

What are the pros? Not bitter, doesn't bolt

What are the cons? Not crisp

Review:

Despite the fact I prefer crispier lettuce, I will grow this one and Devil's Ear every year. It's mid-July in northern CO and I have NEVER had the delight of eating a homegrown tomato (Large Barred Boar) and homegrown lettuce in a salad together. It's also beautiful. Good flavor, no sign of bitterness or bolting yet.
