95-100 days (C. maxima) Possibly our most beautiful heirloom squash. This flattened, round 10-15 lb fruit has a gorgeous salmon-peach colored skin that is covered with large warts! The sweet orange flesh is used in France for soups and also can be baked. We are delighted to offer this French heirloom.

Review:

This is a wonderful squash. It makes the best soup puree and pies as the flavor is rich, but light and delightful. Lots of water in the pumpkin as well. We decorate our home with the pumpkins in the fall and then eat them through the winter. As the squash begin to soften, if we have not eaten them all, we will simply chop the rest and put them in the freezer. Friends love them as gifts. A good producer.

Review:

I started these in the ground in mid- april. Wanted to enter in my county fair in August. I got at least a dozen large beauties from 2 plants alone. The were mature at end of june early july. I picked early so that they would have a chance to turn into that beautiful pink. They did and I won first place at the fair. No one in my area had ever seen these. Lots of fun to grow.

What are the pros? Sweet taste and appearance

Review:

This pumpkin is sweet and flavorful. Though not as flavorful as banana squash, which tastes like heavily buttered when cook. It is very prolific. I learned from a Taiwanese farmer that you should only allow one fruit on each vine to get the most flavorful pumpkin. I did French pruning on my one plant and got 3 pumpkins on three branching vines. I must watch the vine to remove extra pumpkin to enhance the one fruit I want to save. I used one of them to trade 3 gallons of raspberries with my neighbor. Another one for a bag of apples. I kept the biggest one (13 lbs)for Thanksgiving, It got stung by fruit flies and began to rot. I had to cut it up and eat. The steamed chunk smelled like clay pot roasted sweet potato. When I cleared the patch, I found another big immature pumpkin on the vine ,which was yellow. It developed warts gradually, but rot quickly. I grew sweet meat pumpkin, giant banana squash, and this variety this year. Each of them has some good reason to keep in my garden.

Review:

Overall, I would say this is a great squash. It is very ornamental, though it takes some time to 'wart up' so don't be surprised when your squash looks huge but still totally smooth! When cooked up the flesh has a very interesting texture. I think it's best for soups and pies. When pureed it has a very light and fine texture, and the best flavor after roasting. I've heard it's actually best to harvest them before they're fully warty for best flavor, so next year I will harvest some earlier, leaving a few to wart up for decoration. The warty squash still tasted delicious. I'm not sure if it was the wet weather that did it, but both myself and my sister in the next town over noticed three quarters of the way into the season, a few of the squash did go soft on the vine, when none of our other squashes did. However, the ones that remained were very large, so we were still happy. As a side note, I always try roasting squash seeds. These tasted like dirt. Oh well, can't have it all I guess!

I adored this squash. I live in the high desert in Southern California and didn't have much hope for this since it seemed to be a cooler weather squash. It adored the heat and sun in my garden. The leaves shaded the squash from sunburn and it sprawled happily around climbing fences and producing lovely, tastey squash. The only down side was it did take over and smothered some nearby acorn squash. Given room, this should be a delight. The garden prep was basic manure, gypsum, and mulch. Watered it twice a day for fifteen min.
