(Ricinus communis) This old-favorite type produces lovely reddish-bronze leaves and stunning scarlet seed heads. One of the most colorful, it adds a tropical touch to gardens anywhere. (Caution: All parts of the plant, including the seeds, are very poisonous. Do not take internally. Skin contact may cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals.)

What are the pros? Stunning

What are the cons? Japanese beetles love them

Review:

This Castor Bean is a show stopper. Expect lots of questions about this plant because its 6 foot plus height makes it a stand out in the garden. I use it in both my vegetable garden to provide a little relief from the sun as well as in my perennial gardens for some summer visual interest. Its leaves are beautiful as is the fruit.

What are the pros? Quick shade, color, tropical

What are the cons? Bugs and birds eat them

Review:

I had 100% germination. These are supposed to be toxic but they get munched on by both birds and bugs. These plants grow super fast and the better the soil the bigger they get.The color of these stands out among plain green plants especially when they have scarlet colored fresh seed pods! They lend a tropical feel to the yard and are excellent to shade sun-shy smaller plants. They are a perennial in my zone unless we get a hard winter. Seedlings should not be allowed to dry out and even full sized plants love water.

What are the pros? Easy to grow

What are the cons? Exceptionally tall

Review:

These were easy to grow and beautiful. The blooms were spectacular. They are very tall (well over 6') but they were sturdy and I did not experience any flopping. Does not flinch in the hot Southern sun and dry conditions.
